Survey conservation practices of Iron Gall Ink artifacts

Go to the survey: www.univ-lr.fr/IGIsurvey

Dear colleagues,

Problems connected with degradation of paper documents and books caused by iron-gall inks are well known to conservators, restorers and conservation scientists in many countries. Conservators and conservation scientists to try and obtain a better understanding of the behaviour of these inks on occidental papers perform extensive researches. The results of this research are helping to improve our conservation strategies.

Despite these efforts, the "Metals In Paper" European network, MIP for short, collaborators have come to the conclusion that there exists a non-negligible gap between applied research and practical needs and usage in conservation workshops. Moreover, one can observe that even when iron gall-ink artifacts are quite similar, the approach to conservation drastically differs from one conservator to another, and also from one country to another. The personal experiences of conservators are predominant factors when considering a specific treatment and little information on these aspects is available to the community.

Collecting more information on this topic would certainly help in identifying the needs of specific formations and improving the relevance of researches.

That is why MIP organizes a survey on the conservation practices of Iron Gall Ink artifacts. Replying to this survey should take up approx 15 to 30 minutes of your time. The results of this survey will be available on the MIP's web site (www.miponline.org) by January 2006. It will also be presented at the MIP's Newcastle conference in January 2006 and published in the proceedings.

All technical information for replying to this survey is detailed on the attached file "howtoanswer.pdf ".

If you need assistance on how to use the terms and definition (English - French), please download or open the document TRADUCTION

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
